Abstract
(Research background and purpose) A show window is an independent exhibition space in a store that aims to induce customers to choose products. The color element in the design of a shop’s display window can attract customers’ attention and is considered an important factor in determining the success or failure of the design. However, recent research in neuroaesthetics has confirmed that not only the existing color elements but also its transparency is an important factor in the design of a show window that draws attention. These neurological studies show that there are limitations to existing studies focusing on color preference in display windows. In addition, after 2000, one design trend has used both color and transparency. Based on this, this study will analyze the characteristics of color and transparency in display window design, and will confirm that colors with optical properties in display window design can arouse people’s interest. (Method) First, this study examines current cases to determine the usage rules of color and transparency in various design fields, and interprets and understands the rules as knowledge of optical properties. Then, based on the visual system, opaque and transparent colors are compared and analyzed to compare the difference in visual stimuli received by the brain's visual processing system. In addition, the reason people like the optical properties of color transparency in display window design is analyzed from an evolutionary aesthetic and a neuroaesthetic point of view. Lastly, the opinion that the color of optical transparency can arouse people's interest are confirmed by means of a questionnaire. (Result) When the brain simultaneously processes optical transparency other than color, it induces richer and more complex neural activity. Then, through the study of evolutionary aesthetics, it explains the human innate preference for “transparency“ and “clarity.” In addition, the concept of neuroaesthetics is introduced to illustrate how the nervous system perceives this aesthetic awareness. The results of the analysis questionnaire showed that the degree of favorability was higher in the transparency added to the color, and the preference was confirmed as a visual characteristic of optical information processing possessed by the brain. (Conclusion) In this study, it was confirmed that color design with transparency was preferred to opaque color in display window design. This research provides a theoretical basis for more effective use of color optical properties in display window design, and is expected to be meaningful in display window design in the future.
