Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Because the color preference in simple colors does not appear in the object, some researchers have reported that an object's function or context affects its color preference. In the design process, object color appropriateness is important as a preference factor, but finding a property that enhances that color's visual attractiveness is still an important task. Therefore, this study attempts to determine whether the object color preference appears even excluding the functional context. This study focuses on object color as an interaction between light and surface from an optical perspective and finds a surface property that affects object color preference. (Method) Specifically, we address two main questions about object color preference. Firstly, do object color preferences appear even in contextless object color? When the object color preference appears in contextless object, surface factors can be explained because object color in this study was only affected surface property. Next, we look at whether transparency, which is a surface property, affects color preference. To this end, 200 subjects were shown 18 images of objects without function or meaning, and they were asked to rate how much they liked each object color on a 5-point scale. The objects used in the questionnaire were created using a 3-D modeling program and rendered to express a specific color and transparency at the same time. (Results) As a result, first, we confirmed that object color preferences exist in objects without apparent function. This illustrates there is another factor affecting color preference that is not related to function. Second, on average, transparent objects are more likely to be preferred when it comes to object color. In particular, transparency was a factor that significantly influenced object color preference even more so than color. The results were transparent yellow-green, green, blue, purple were all favored over their translucent and opaque counterparts. However, additional research is needed because red and yellow did not show a linear relationship between transparency and color preference. People preferred translucent red over transparent red and opaque yellow over translucent yellow. (Conclusions) In conclusion, this study confirmed that color and transparency as surface properties determine object color preference. Previous studies have analyzed hue, value, and saturation as factors of color preference. In particular, some researchers suggested that the object's functional context is a factor of object color preference. However, by confirming color preference even in objects without function and meaning, we suggest that transparency influences object color preference.
