Abstract

(Research Background and Purpose) With the development of modern science and technology, products that fused the features of cultures by different countries are becoming popular. However, products with Chinese characteristics are becoming less so. The public space is a place where people conduct activities and communicate with each other in everyday life, and its atmosphere has a great impact on people. The aesthetics of calligraphy are expressed by the calligrapher. Calligraphy is a spatial art and abides by the rules of its aesthetics. Studies have shown that calligraphy and Chinese architecture have many similarities. Through a discussion on the aesthetics of calligraphy and calligraphy space, and by applying them to a public space, it can be helpful in the development and transmission of traditional culture. The purpose of this research is to observe public spaces in Jiangnan water towns in China from the perspective of calligraphy aesthetics, and to explore the commonalities and characteristics between them to prove that the buildings in the towns have the characteristics of calligraphy aesthetics. (Method) First, the types of aesthetics, constituent elements, spatial and structural elements, and principles of calligraphy were investigated through a review of the literature. Second, an investigation of prior research and theories by scholars on elements of public spaces in the architecture of Jiangnan water towns was performed to reveal the relationship between calligraphy and architecture. Third, based on the findings of these investigations, an analysis was conducted on public spaces in the architecture of Jiangnan water towns from the perspective of calligraphy aesthetics to understand their characteristics and correlations. Finally, selected cases were analyzed through the exported features. (Results) The objective of the case analysis was to analyze public spaces in the ancient water towns and gardens of Jiangnan, which have received historical and cultural protection by China as they represent architectural types. The aesthetics of calligraphy and the public spaces in Jiangnan water towns were examined to reveal the commonalities between calligraphy and Chinese architecture. Based on the principle of calligraphy space, five characteristics were identified that provided an analytical framework. The constituent elements of the public spaces in Jiangnan water towns were proven to show the aesthetic characteristics of calligraphy. (Conclusions) The public spaces of ancient towns and gardens transcend the tourism function. When they are combined with calligraphy aesthetics, they play the role of conveying history and culture to form more value. As the public spaces in the representative buildings in Jiangnan water towns showcase the characteristics of calligraphy aesthetics, more public spaces with modern calligraphy aesthetics in the towns can be expected in the future.
