Abstract
(Background and purpose)Ancient Chinese calligraphy, transcending its original linguistic role, has evolved into a significant cultural and aesthetic representation. It not only reflects cultural traditions and societal changes but also embodies the emotions and concepts of artists. This study hypothesizes that the unique artistic charm and cultural significance of calligraphic works are influenced by various factors such as calligraphy fonts, ink and brush techniques, composition, layout, rhythm, and their inherent qualities. The aim is to conduct a comprehensive theoretical examination of calligraphy works and their interrelations, using case study analysis to reveal these connections. (Method) The research encompasses an extensive review of literature on calligraphy, calligraphic works, and calligraphic aesthetics, as well as the relationships among these aspects. The analysis focuses primarily on calligraphic works and relics housed in museums. The methodology includes a detailed theoretical examination of calligraphy and its elements, an exploration of the aesthetic relationship between calligraphy and its works, and the identification of five distinct types of relationships derived from this analysis. The study then employs a detailed analysis framework to conduct case studies, synthesizing the findings to draw conclusions. (Results) The results have confirmed that calligraphy characters possess a unique spatial sculptural beauty and temporal characteristics, attributed to the 'force' generated by the structure and techniques used in calligraphy. The study identifies five types of relationships between calligraphy and calligraphic works: formative, spatio-temporal, lyrical, expressive, and abstract. These relationships are characterized by the interaction of various elements such as the 'law' of calligraphy rules, the 'momentum' of forms, the 'spirit' of brush techniques, and the 'rhythm' of the overall work. Furthermore, it has been found that the constituent elements of calligraphic works, including the diversity of ink marks and scripts and the variety of font sizes and arrangements, significantly contribute to the spatial sense and temporal direction of the work. These elements, in combination with the calligrapher's inner emotions, profoundly influence the emotions and imagination of the viewers. (Conclusion) In conclusion, this study has established the existence of a multifaceted relationship between calligraphy and calligraphic works, highlighting the aesthetic value that emerges from the interaction among calligraphers, their works, and the appreciators. It confirms that the emotions intended by the calligrapher are effectively conveyed to the appreciators through the constituent elements of the calligraphic works. This research forms a foundational basis for studying the spatial aspect of calligraphic aesthetics and aims to be a cornerstone for future exploration of the influence of calligraphic aesthetics in traditional Chinese cultural arts on other art forms.
