Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Modern society has transformed into a lifestyle that consumes and enjoys culture and art. The demand for a complex cultural space that can accommodate both culture and art has increased. Performance facilities are also changing into more complex facilities; however, the use of facilities is influenced by the presence or absence of performance, and the use of facilities is low when there is no performance. Moreover, the role of the community in performance facilities is weak, and there is a limit to securing connectivity between complex facilities. Therefore, there is a need to change how performance facilities should be modified for community role performance and space activation in a complex cultural space. The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in space and its utilization status through various domestic and foreign cases: an advanced case of being operated as a complex cultural space among cultural facilities, and to derive space activation factors applicable to the space of performance facilities as a complex cultural space in Korea in the future. (Method) This study grasps the main concepts and roles of performance facilities and complex cultural spaces through theoretical considerations and derives the direction of space activation of complex cultural spaces from previous studies. For practical verification of the derived concept, domestic and foreign case objectives were selected and analyzed. Institutions were selected as cases based on their spatial data considering their activation status as a complex cultural space. The direction and suitability of space activation were confirmed through methods such as literature data, homepage data, Internet surveys, and field visits. (Results) In analyzing the space status of the case object view, the following was discovered: elements of the spatial arrangement characteristics can promote the functional fusion of the space and space activation, the opening of the physical space as the element of the visual characteristic, and the clear concept of the spatial function as an element of the functional characteristic of the space. (Conclusions) To play the role of a complex cultural space, it was found that the function of space should be integrated where various activities in daily life are possible together with the enjoyment of culture and art, rather than a simple complexation between cultural facilities. Furthermore, to reestablish its role as a complex cultural space by applying the derived elements to domestic performance facilities, it is expected that the status of performance facilities will be enhanced and revitalized by providing a space centered on communication to the public owing to space changes.
