Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) manifests following significant traumatic events, leading to severe psychological and emotional disturbances. Symptoms include re-experiencing traumatic events, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and heightened arousal and reactivity. These symptoms often result in substantial impairments in daily functioning. Despite PTSD treatments traditionally residing within the psychiatric domain, there is an emerging consensus on the importance of incorporating environmental interventions. This study aims to leverage the capabilities of artificial intelligence to conceptualize space design that significantly aids in the healing process of PTSD sufferers, thereby providing innovative directions in therapeutic environmental design. (Method) This research unfolds in three pivotal stages: Initially, it involves extracting pertinent keywords from theoretical reviews and prior research on PTSD, with the aim of outlining essential components for the design of healing spaces. Secondly, the study delves into the exploration of AI tools, specifically ChatGPT and Midjourney, for their potential in creating therapeutic environments. By harnessing these technologies, the study aims to generate visual prompts derived from the identified keywords and subsequently produce images that encapsulate the conceptualized healing spaces. Lastly, the study's methodology encompasses the validation of these AI-generated images through Focus Group Interviews (FGI) with professionals and surveys aimed at gauging their practical applicability and relevance in real-world therapeutic settings. (Results) Through iterative learning and application of AI in case studies, the research produced a series of images evaluated for their therapeutic potential. Despite receiving lower scores in terms of validity from the groups of space designers and psychological counselors, the images were highly rated in other aspects, reflecting their potential utility in healing spaces. The comparative analysis further revealed that psychological experts found more value in the AI-generated designs than did the space designers, indicating a significant alignment with therapeutic needs. (Conclusions) The study highlights the promising intersection between artificial intelligence and therapeutic space design for PTSD recovery. By effectively utilizing AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney, the research demonstrates that it is feasible to create visually and psychologically supportive environments tailored to the needs of PTSD sufferers. The findings advocate for the innovative application of AI in the realm of mental health, suggesting that AI can play a crucial role in advancing therapeutic space design and potentially transforming the landscape of mental health treatment. Through this approach, AI not only facilitates the creation of healing spaces but also underscores the importance of integrating technology with psychological insights to foster environments conducive to recovery and well-being.
