Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In 2019, the government established the ‘Life SOC Three-Year Plan’ to resolve the shortage of Life SOC facilities and to renovate aged facilities. A core business of this plan was the Life SOC complex project, which aimed to construct facilities by combining two or more Life SOC facilities on a single site or building, either as single or interconnected structures. Consequently, 530 complex facilities were selected, with at least one planned in 202 of 228 regions nationwide. Even after the plan ended, the demand and expectation for Life SOC complex facilities continued to grow, with municipalities planning new ones. However, there are currently not enough standards for the spatial planning of complex facilities. The purpose of this study is to analyze territoriality in the common-use spaces of complex facilities based on advanced cases and derive planning methods for common-use spaces. (Method) This study focuses on facilities where two or more structures are combined on a single site or within a single building. The domestic and international advanced cases were selected as superior cases with complex public facilities, and the domestic cases focused on cases with life SOC complex facilities. The research methodology involves reviewing previous studies to organize the concepts of Life SOC, Life SOC complex types, and common use spaces, and then identifying how these spaces are utilized from the perspective of territoriality. Following this, an analysis of the complex types and types of integration between facilities in both domestic and international cases is conducted to derive the physical characteristics of common-use spaces in these complex facilities. Based on these findings, the study analyzes the utilization programs and architectural planning methods for common-use spaces and explores planning methods that make intermediate territories within these spaces. (Results) The analysis reveals that the level of physical and functional integration of complex facilities varies depending on how common-use spaces are utilized. When these spaces are merely used for circulation or are visually connected by voids like atriums without physical connection, the facilities remain functionally and physically disconnected, and the common-use spaces are underutilized. However, when common-use spaces are used to connect areas without physical boundaries and programs that activate user activities are introduced to form intermediate territories, it can lead to the physical and functional integration of the facilities. (Conclusions) Although common-use spaces are intended for everyone’s free use, their role and significance are often overlooked. Similarly, Life SOC facilities are designed for everyday use by local residents, and the common-use spaces in Life SOC complex facilities play an even more important role. This study was able to suggest the significance of planning methods that utilize common-use spaces as intermediaries in Life SOC complex facilities.
