Abstract

(Research background and purpose) The Seoul Metropolitan Government has established the 'Seoul Hanok 4.0 Reinvention Plan', a comprehensive long-term policy for Hanok. The plan aims to revitalize contemporary Hanok by relaxing regulations and creating new Hanok villages are suited to regional characteristics. The government will create 10 Hanok villages in various locations over the next 10 years. It is possible to predict that in the future, Hanok will become more accessible to people’s daily lives and will develop into various forms and functions in the fuutre. This study proposes the necessity and direction of applying universal design to Hanok so that it can be developed into an environment where various types of users can share the Hanok experience. The aim is to lay the foundation for future Hanok to be accessible to everyone. (Research Method) This study reviews previous research on Hanok and universal design, and theoretically examines related concepts and policies. Based on the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Hanok policy and plan trends announced in February 2023, the future direction of Hanok modernization is identified. Additionally this survey on the accessibility status of online and offline spaces targeting in Eunpyeong Hanok Village, the largest new Hanok complex in Seoul, and proposed the necessity of applying universal design principles and conducting further research when developing future Hanok villages. (Results)The analysis of the current status of new Hanok confirms changes in its structure, including the use of contemporary materials and a two-story design. Additionally, it is confirmed that accessibility was greatly improved by eliminating steps or installing ramps at the main entrance as much as possible. However, to enhance the experience of Hanok, it is necessary to secure continuous pedestrian safety space and a guidance system. Furthermore, further research is required on accessing the interior space of Hanok. It is also necessary to consider understanding and applying of the accessibility and reinterpretation direction of the Swiss Embassy in Korea, a modern architecture that reinterprets Hanok.(Conclusion) Hanok is no longer an uncomfortable space, but anyone can live or share the experience of the space together. In particular, universal design should be applied to new hanoks established by Seoul to ensure accessibility for all. A wide range of considerations should give to architecture, space, services, and products. Hanok is not just for the privileged few. This research plan will continue to develop it through follow-up studies to ensure that universal activities are possible even in limited forms, such as Hanoks, which have spent one's golden years in a Hanok accessible without difficulties even by wheelchair or walking aid users.
