Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In the modern society, the concept of mourning is changing from a general memorial that simply means “honoring a deceased person” to one that involves feeling the sadness of others and overcoming their sadness together. Against this backdrop, mourning appears as an architectural space. This study aimed to classify geometric morphological characteristics through mourning recognition and to derive the characteristics of mourning space expressions targeting representative overseas memorials since 1980. (Method) Theoretical literature and architectural collections, such as papers and books related to mourning, memorial spaces, and geometry, were analyzed. Chapter 1 presents the background, purpose, scope, and method of the study. Chapter 2 establishes the theoretical considerations, morphological concept of geometry, and theoretical definition of mourning. Chapter 3 classifies the geometric and morphological characteristics using grief recognition. Chapter 4 presents a case analysis of a mourning space based on its geometric and morphological characteristics. Finally, Chapter 5 concludes the study. (Results) A case analysis of the expression of mourning space through geometric morphological characteristics was conducted by analyzing four representative overseas memorial works since 1980. As a result of the first derivation, the objectivity of geometry is an independent form that appears in space, and the mourning of the lost other is projected and symbolized in the space of mourning recognition. Subsequently, the borderlessness of geometry appears as an expansion of space through morphological ambiguity because of the combination of circular spaces, and the visual experience of the lost other expands into a mourning space of experience and recognition. Finally, the infinite enemy of geometry is a continuous transcendental space. The death of the other person is the beginning, not the end, of the lost person. With the recognition of extension and continuation, the space for transcendental mourning becomes infinite. (Conclusion) When analyzing mourning spaces, geometric morphological characteristics were derived from the perception of mourning. Geometrical forms appearing in pure shapes constitute a space of mourning and appear as a space to overcome sadness. This study is a research paper analyzing the morphological characteristics of geometry and derives expressions of mourning recognition through the example of a mourning space. Our research will serve as a stepping stone for the development of the form and concept of mourning spaces in the future.
