(The British Museum, The Louvre Museum, Smithsonian Institution)을 대상으로 XR 기술 활용 사례를 조사하였다.
Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Recent advancements in extended reality (XR) technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), have played a pivotal role in enhancing immersion and interactivity in museums and exhibition spaces. These technologies transcend the limitations of traditional exhibitions by offering visitors new dimensions of experiential value, expanding the educational and cultural roles of museums. This study aims to analyze the use of XR technologies in major museums, evaluate their technical approaches and experiential value, and propose strategies to enhance the museum experience. (Method) This study examined XR technology applications in domestic museums (National Gyeongju Museum, Seoul Museum of Art, and National Museum of Korea) and international museums (The British Museum, the Louvre Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution). The scope included VR, AR, and MR technologies, focusing on their impact on exhibitions and visitor experiences. Key factors such as immersion, interactivity, real-time feedback, sensory experience (SE), aesthetic experience (AE), technological experience (TE), and relational experience (RE) were analyzed to assess experiential value comprehensively. (Results) The analysis reveals that domestic museums excel in VR-based immersive experiences, particularly in the SE and AE dimensions. For example, the VR experience at the National Gyeongju Museum’s Silla History Hall vividly reconstructs ancient Silla heritage sites and provides visitors with a deeply immersive experience. Conversely, international museums have demonstrated strengths in AR and MR, particularly in the TE and RE dimensions. The Louvre’s AR guide enhances the contextual understanding of exhibits, while the Smithsonian Institution’s MR Experience fosters interaction between virtual content and reality, amplifying visitor engagement. (Conclusion) This study underscores that XR technologies are not merely tools but also transformative mediators that redefine visitor experiences in museums. Domestic museums should focus on balancing technological development and diversifying experiential elements, whereas international museums should enhance VR and real-time feedback applications to broaden their immersive experiences. Future research should quantitatively evaluate the UX and the long-term effects of XR-based exhibitions. Furthermore, the development of innovative interactive media that reflect technological advancements and cultural contexts will contribute to enriching emotional and cognitive experiences, ultimately redefining museums’ educational and cultural missions.
