Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Rapid advancements in digital technology have led to the widespread adoption of eXtended reality (XR) exhibitions that encompass virtual, augmented, and mixed reality across various fields, including art, education, and entertainment. By maximizing immersion and interactivity, XR exhibitions offer the potential for emotional and cognitive engagement, which differ significantly from traditional physical exhibitions. However, empirical research on the specific design elements of XR exhibitions that enhance user satisfaction and learning outcomes remains insufficient. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the influence of XR exhibitions on user experience and propose practical insights for effective XR exhibition design. As an illustrative case, “Yours, Vincent” was selected, and quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to analyze immersion, interactivity, visual satisfaction, learning effectiveness, and overall satisfaction. (Method) On May 30, 2024, a first survey was administered to 30 college students majoring in design, each of whom visited the “Yours, Vincent” exhibition. A 5-point Likert scale was used to measure the overall XR exhibition experience, including immersion, interactivity, and satisfaction. Subsequently, 20 respondents were contacted to complete a retrospective survey, which focused on zone-specific immersion, interactivity, visual satisfaction, and learning effectiveness. In addition, five participants were selected for semi-structured follow-up interviews to gain deeper insights into the qualitative aspects and emotional responses associated with the exhibition. The collected data underwent descriptive statistics, a correlation analysis, and a regression analysis to test the hypotheses (H1: Immersion–Satisfaction; H2: Interactivity–Intention to Revisit). Thematic coding was used for the qualitative analysis of the interview content. (Results) The findings indicated that higher immersion in an XR exhibition was associated with greater overall satisfaction (supporting H1), whereas higher interactivity was correlated with stronger intentions to revisit (supporting H2). Notably, Zones 3 (letter interaction), 5 (sunflower experience), and 8 (aroma or psychological test) featured prominent participatory elements that enhanced immersion and learning effectiveness. The qualitative analysis further confirmed the importance of visual presentation, emotional empathy, multisensory stimulation, and personalized elements in enriching the user experience. (Conclusion) This study demonstrated that XR exhibitions can significantly increase user satisfaction and learning effectiveness by incorporating active engagement and emotional empathy through interactive design, rather than relying solely on visual stimuli. Although the sample was limited to 30 students majoring in design in their 20s, and the retrospective survey was conducted approximately two weeks after the exhibition (increasing the possibility of memory biases), the results suggested that immersive interactivity and storytelling are indispensable for planning and operating XR exhibitions across diverse domains, such as art, education, and entertainment. Expanding future research with larger and more diverse samples and objective observational data can provide a more refined understanding of the profound user experiences enabled by XR exhibitions.
