Abstract

(Background and Purpose) With the development of the times, modern people's lifestyles have changed, and the traditional public libraries, with reading as the core, have been difficult to meet the demand, prompting them to transform into composite cultural spaces. However, the transformation of public libraries into composite cultural spaces is not a simple superposition of functions, but involves multiple spatial production processes, such as knowledge acquisition, cultural exchanges, and social interactions. Therefore, based on the perspective of spatial production, combining the functions of public libraries with the characteristics of composite cultural space, the spatial characteristics of public libraries as composite cultural space are proposed to provide a direction for the future design and the adjustment and optimization of the existing space. (Method) Based on the analysis of public libraries, composite cultural space and spatial production theory research, this study combines the function of public libraries with the characteristics of composite cultural space, and puts forward the five characteristics of cultural symbolism, dynamic composite, spatial accessibility, emotional co-construction and functional integration. The study selects the West Loop Branch of Chicago Public Library, Calgary Public Library, Anjo Public Library and Lockhart Public Library, which have been built in the past ten years. The current situation and spatial characteristics are analyzed through case studies, and the results are charted to summarize the conclusions. (Results) The results show that functional integration, cultural symbolism and dynamic composability are the most significant characteristics of the public library composite cultural space, indicating that the spatial and functional transformation of public libraries has been highly recognized as a symbol of local culture through the use of iconic buildings and the transformation of industrial facilities. In contrast, spatial accessibility and emotional co-construction still need to be improved, and some libraries face challenges in public transportation access, community interaction and social cohesion shaping. (Conclusions) This study explores the transformation of public libraries into composite cultural spaces from the perspective of spatial production and draws three conclusions. First, modern public libraries are not only knowledge storage spaces, but should integrate multiple functions, flexibly adjust their layout, and enhance their utilization efficiency to promote their sustainable development in the public cultural system. Secondly, public libraries have become symbols of local and social cultural memory by shaping cultural identities through landmark buildings, historical heritage renovation and embedding local cultures, and need to pay attention to site selection and transportation planning to ensure the fair distribution of resources, so that all groups can enjoy cultural services conveniently. Thirdly, public libraries are not only physical spaces, but also places for community interaction, knowledge sharing and cultural exchanges, and should become the core of community cultural cohesion and promote social reconstruction through user contact and cultural activities.
