Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Traditionally, museums have functioned as public cultural institutions centered on collecting, preserving, researching, and educating the public about artifacts. However, the rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT) and digital transformation in the 21st century has significantly changed exhibition methods and museum operations. Notably, online VR museums have emerged as a notable innovation, simulating real museum environments through 3D technologies and panoramic images, allowing users to explore exhibitions remotely. Despite these advantages, recent studies and user behavior analyses indicate that most VR museum results in one-time experiences, with limited revisit rates. In this context, it is essential to examine how immersive experiences in virtual museum spaces influence actual user behavior, especially revisit intention. Thus, this study aims to empirically analyze the impact of virtual space characteristics in online VR museums on revisit intention to provide foundational data for user-centered online exhibition design. (Method) The study began with a literature review and analysis of previous research to define the concept and functions of online VR museums as well as to synthesize the various spatial composition characteristics presented in earlier studies. Four characteristics—experiential immersion, interactivity, information navigation, and educational empowerment—were identified and used to construct a survey. The online questionnaire was distributed to 250 users who had experienced with the five major VR museum platforms in China. A total of 238 valid responses were analyzed using SPSS 27 to test the survey’s reliability and validity, perform exploratory factor analysis, and conduct correlation and multiple regression analyses. (Results) The analysis revealed that educational empowerment and experiential immersion had a significant, positive influence on users’ intention to revisit. Educational empowerment had the strongest effect, highlighting the importance of content that promotes learning and cognitive engagement, beyond mere information delivery. In contrast, interactivity and information navigation were not statistically significant, indicating that system usability and structural clarity alone may be insufficient for sustaining user engagement. The robustness of regression model(R²= 0.553) is confirmed by its ability to account accounting for more than half of the variation in revisit behavior. (Conclusions) This study demonstrates the link between virtual space features in online VR museums and user revisit intention, providing practical insights for planning user-centered digital exhibitions. Given the critical roles of educational empowerment and experiential immersion, future VR museum content should emphasize multilingual narration, video storytelling, interactive learning, and immersive visual design. These findings contribute to enhancing the sustainability and user engagement of digital museum experiences in a rapidly evolving cultural environment.
