Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In art appreciation, emotions are not merely affective responses but are gradually structured through repeated aesthetic experiences across neural, social, and cognitive dimensions. Initially triggered by visual stimuli, emotional responses become ingrained as ‘emotional inertia’ through prediction, internalization, and the consolidation of specific neural circuits. This study examines how emotional inertia is culturally stylized under social selection pressures and empirically demonstrates how emotions operate as central forces in the formation, persistence, and transmission of artistic styles. Emphasis is placed on how emotional codes emerge through neuroplasticity, affective prediction systems, and internalized social hierarchies, leading to an integrated understanding of the mechanisms underlying artistic emotion. (Method) The study selected 15 representative paintings from the 15th to the 21st centuries, each exemplifying distinct emotional expressions of their respective eras. Based on prior literature and art historical narratives, three core emotional codes were identified—sublime-serene, passionate-narrative, and pleasurable-idealized—each mapped to a specific form of social selection: refined elitism, storytelling structure, and the Veblen effect, respectively. Each painting was qualitatively analyzed for emotion-inducing mechanisms (e.g., color, composition, visual flow), while emotional valence was quantitatively measured using the VAD (valence-arousal-dominance) model. The stabilization mechanisms of emotional style were interpreted using theoretical frameworks related to neuroplasticity, affective prediction circuits, and social hierarchy processing. (Results) The analysis revealed recurrent structural linkages between emotional codes and specific social selection pressures. Sublime-serene emotions consistently aligned with refined elitism, passionate-narrative with storytelling, and pleasurable-idealized with the Veblen effect. These emotional code-selection pressure pairings appeared repeatedly across different historical periods, suggesting a persistent emotional style structure. Drawing on previous neuroscience literature, these pairings were interpreted in relation to known emotional processing circuits: the dlPFC ventral striatum control-reward loop (for sublime-serene), the mPFC–PCC–TPJ narrative-empathy network (for passionate-narrative), and the OFC–NAcc sensory-reward circuit (for pleasurable-idealized). This indicates that artistic emotion is not solely a product of stylistic shifts but is shaped through recurrent neural-cognitive mechanisms modulated by sociocultural constraints. (Conclusion) By identifying consistent pairings of emotional codes and social selection pressures across 15 canonical paintings from the 15th to 21st centuries, this study empirically demonstrates the existence of emotional inertia in artistic expression. It further offers a neuroaesthetic interpretation of how these pairings correspond to distinct affective circuits, proposing that artistic emotion constitutes a multilayered system integrating aesthetic, social, and neural elements. The study contributes a new analytical framework—“inertial-emotional style”—to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of affective sociology, art history, and neuroaesthetics. However, limitations remain due to the exclusive focus on Western painting and the absence of empirical neuroimaging data. Future studies should explore non-Western examples, diverse media, and experimental validation using neuroimaging techniques.
