Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Modern cities are increasingly perceived not merely as physical spaces but as places imbued with layered social meanings and emotional resonances. The proliferation of digital media has further transformed the way individuals engage with and interpret urban spaces, enabling for personalized and fragmented representations. As a result, a single place can evoke divergent narratives depending on the medium through which it is mediated. This study explores how two different types of digital media—news articles and personal blog posts—construct contrasting representations of Ihwa-dong Mural Village, a symbolic site of urban regeneration in Seoul. By analyzing these narratives, the study aims to uncover how emotional and thematic differences emerge according to media type, and how these differences shape public perception and experience of the place . (Method) A total of 1,830 news articles and 3,191 blog posts related to Ihwa-dong Mural Village were collected using the Naver Open API. The dataset underwent preprocessing including morpheme analysis, tokenization, and stopword removal to ensure analytical clarity. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) was applied to extract underlying thematic structures, while sentiment analysis using the Pororo deep learning model assessed the emotional tone of the texts. Additionally, Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) was conducted to identify distinctive keywords between the two media types. A temporal analysis of sentiment variation and topic prominence was also carried out to understand evolving media trends over time. (Results) The analysis revealed that news articles predominantly ad dressed institutional and conflict-oriented themes, frequently featuring terms such as “residents,” “urban re generation,” and “community,” with sentiments leaning toward neutral or negative tones. These narratives were often concentrated around specific time periods coinciding with public controversies or policy debates. In contrast, blog posts were characterized by experiential and user-centered content, emphasizing keywords like “restaurants,” “sightseeing,” and “murals.” Blogs consistently exhibited more positive and neutral emotional tones, reflecting personal enjoyment and aesthetic appreciation. TF-IDF results further highlighted significant lexical differences, confirming that each media type emphasizes distinct aspects of the same place. (Conclusions) This study empirically demonstrates that different digital me dia platforms construct place narratives with varying emotional and thematic orientations. The findings underscore the ne cessity of accounting for media-specific storytelling in fields such as public design, tourism development, and urban poli cy-making. However, the research is limited to text-based media and does not capture the psychological or embodied as pects of place experience. Future studies should incorporate diverse data forms, including visual media and qualitative methods like interviews and participant observation, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how urban spaces are emotionally experienced and socially constructed.
