Abstract
(Background and Purpose) By 2025, Korea is projected to become a super-aged society. In response to the profound demographic changes inherent in this transition, it is essential to broaden discussions surrounding senior tourism to align with the principles of accessible tourism, which advocate for the elimination of discrimination and exclusion across all tourism activities. This study conducted a survey to identify preferred tourist destinations among seniors and to assess whether the physical environments of these destinations are suitable for senior tourists, utilizing an evaluation framework based on universal design. The findings provide foundational data on senior tourist destinations that promote accessible tourism and offer insights for senior tourism policy development. (Method) This study examined the physical environments of tourist destinations in the Daegu area and assessed tourism convenience for seniors through both surveys and field investigations. Initially, a survey was conducted with cultural tourism guides to ascertain their insights regarding senior-preferred tourist destinations, selection criteria, and potential areas for improvement. Subsequently, a field survey was then conducted to evaluate the tourism convenience of these preferred destinations using an open checklist informed by universal design principles. (Results) A study of senior tourist preferences reveals a lack of preference for a specific type of tourist destination. Instead, seniors are observed to frequent a diverse range of locations, including urban parks, natural parks, lakes, traditional villages, streets, markets, temples, historical parks, and transportation hubs such as Munyang Subway Station. The most significant factor influencing seniors' choice of tourist destination is cost, followed by safety and the overall appeal of the destination. Recommendations for enhancing tourism for seniors include identifying accessible destinations within walking distance, ensuring safe environments, offering experiential programs, and providing promotional materials in large print. The survey results indicated that the environments of preferred tourist destinations are generally inadequate for tourism activities, with most destinations being only partially suitable rather than fully accommodating. Additionally, many destinations lack a variety of tourism experience programs tailored for seniors. (Conclusions) This study contributes to the understanding of preferred tourist destinations among seniors and the physical environments of these locations through comprehensive surveys and field investigations. Notably, the study's expansion to encompass the broader Daegu Metropolitan City distinguishes it from existing research by addressing previous limitations. Nonetheless, the ability to generalize the characteristics of tourist destinations favored by senior tourists remains limited based on the current findings. Future research should aim to extend the spatial scope to cover the entire country, facilitating a more comprehensive discussion on senior tourists' needs and appropriate environments.
