Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Today, research facilities are evolving beyond simple workspaces and into complex environments that foster interdisciplinary thinking and creative research activities. This change highlights the growing importance of communication spaces, which facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration among members. These spaces are crucial in creating an environment where information and ideas flow freely. Given that research institutes are often specialized and experimental in nature, the layout and connectivity between spaces directly impact communication patterns and member activities. Therefore, strategic spatial planning plays a key role in enhancing the functionality and effectiveness of these facilities. (Method) This study aims to analyze the characteristics of communication spaces within research institutes and their impact on the activation of communication. The study adopts Space Syntax as its theoretical framework and focuses on five representative research institutes in the United States: the University of Chicago, UC San Diego, Oregon Health &Science University, Northeastern University, and the Allen Institute. These cases were selected because they showcase a variety of spatial strategies, such as laboratory and research space configurations, centrality, connectivity, and the use of boundary spaces. To conduct the quantitative analysis, the study employs DepthmapX software. The research applies multiple spatial analysis techniques, including Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA), convex analysis, and isovist analysis, to generate key indicators such as visual accessibility, connectivity, and integration. (Results) The analysis reveals that communication spaces positioned in areas with high visual integration and connectivity encourage more natural interactions and information exchange among members. Highly visible spaces, such as lounges, corridors, and bridges, were found to promote informal communication. These spaces, especially those located centrally or connected to multiple key areas, serve as important communication hubs. Furthermore, the use of "in-between spaces," areas that connect laboratory and office spaces, emerged as a significant design strategy. These spaces played an important role in facilitating collaboration and reducing psychological distance among members, contributing to a more cohesive and effective work environment. (Conclusions) This study offers valuable insights into how communication spaces can be strategically placed to enhance collaboration and interaction within research facilities. It demonstrates that Space Syntax is an effective tool for spatial planning in research institutes. The findings underscore the importance of visual integration and connectivity in the placement of communication spaces. Future research should explore how these findings can be applied to a wider range of research environments, using actual user behavior data, and extending the results into generalized design guidelines for optimizing space configurations in research facilities.
