Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Augmented Reality (AR) technology has rapidly evolved into a pivotal medium that merges the physical and digital realms, creating immersive and interactive user experiences. By overlaying virtual objects or information onto real-world settings, AR fundamentally redefines how users engage with digital content across diverse industries such as gaming, information delivery, retail, education, and entertainment. This study aims to identify the core elements of successful interaction design within AR-based digital spaces by examining four primary categories of AR applications: gaming AR, informational AR, experiential AR, and visual effect AR. Through this categorization, the research seeks to evaluate each category's distinct advantages and limitations, ultimately proposing design strategies to enhance user experience (UX) and foster sustained user engagement. (Method) To achieve this objective, the study selected representative AR applications-Pokémon GO, Google Lens, Today's House AR Furniture, and Snapchat Lenses-as case studies. These applications were chosen based on their contributions to advancing interaction design and elevating user experience through AR technology. A comparative analysis was conducted, focusing on eight evaluation criteria: interactivity, spatial integration, immersion, realism, interest and entertainment, feedback, personalization, and reward systems. By systematically assessing each application against these criteria, the study aimed to derive best practices and improvement points applicable to a broad range of AR services. (Results) The findings revealed that each AR application type has unique strengths and weaknesses. Pokémon GO demonstrated outstanding immersion and high retention rates, driven by gamification and location-based interaction. Google Lens excelled in real-time information delivery and realistic overlay integration, but had relatively limited immersion and entertainment value. Today's House AR Furniture offered an intuitive interface and strong personalization features, yet required further development in sustaining user interest and deepening immersion. Snapchat Lenses provided high levels of visual immersion and entertainment by encouraging creative user expression, but the absence of a robust reward system constrained long-term engagement. (Conclusion) Based on these results, the study identifies interactivity, spatial integration, immersion, realism, interest and entertainment, feedback, personalization, and reward systems as foundational elements of effective AR interaction design. The insights gained demonstrate the broad potential of AR technology in reshaping user experiences, while also indicating areas for further refinement in design and implementation. Moreover, the study underscores the importance of strategic AR application within diverse fields, offering foundational knowledge for future AR development and service design. Subsequent research should explore the integration of AR with emerging platforms such as the metaverse and AI, ultimately revealing novel UX paradigms and pioneering innovative approaches to AR utilization across various industries.
