Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The royal tombs of Joseon are the burial sites of the kings and queens who ruled the dynasty. Of the 40 Joseon royal tombs, 39 are located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, where urbanization has been most intense. In the process of rapid urbanization, there have been many changes in the urban function and land use of the area around the Joseon royal tombs. Although research on the surrounding areas of the Joseon royal tombs is essential for their preservation and utilization, existing studies remain insufficient. Therefore, this study's objective is to derive the basic urban characteristics and typologies of the areas surrounding the Joseon royal tombs. (Method) The study targets five historical sites of the Joseon royal tombs in Seoul. To analyze the characteristics of the areas surrounding the Joseon royal tombs in Seoul, five 1,500m × 1,500m zones were selected, each centered on the coordinates of a royal tomb. First, the urbanization process and urban planning related to the Joseon royal tombs are examined through literature reviews, institutional analyses, and mapping. A status analysis is conducted for each area, focusing on maps. Next, using public data, a descriptive statistical analysis is conducted on population, economic activity, land parcels, urban planning, and buildings. Finally, by integrating this information, the characteristics and types of the areas surrounding the Joseon Royal Tombs are derived. (Results) Based on the analysis, the Joseon Royal Tombs located in Seoul can be categorized into three types. The first is the Residential Type. Because of the large number of detached houses, the lot and building sizes are small, and many old buildings are present. Type 1 and Type 2 General Residential Zones are mainly applied. The second is the Urban Mixed-Use Type, which combines residential, commercial, and business facilities in a downtown setting. Type 3 General Residential Zones and General Commercial Zones are mainly applied. The third is the Urban Outskirts Type. As a restricted development zone outside the city, it has low population density, few buildings, and specialized infrastructure. (Conclusions) Through this study, it was possible to examine the current urban organization and characteristics of the areas surrounding the Joseon Royal Tombs in Seoul through the urbanization process. Using public data, the characteristics of the areas were quantitatively derived and analyzed, and the areas around the Joseon royal tombs in Seoul were divided into three types. The characteristics and types of the areas surrounding the Joseon royal tombs in Seoul result from the spatial overlap between their locations and Seoul’s urban planning.
