Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Modern education has shifted from rote learning toward a constructivist paradigm that emphasizes autonomous participation and communication. In this context, educational facilities are expected to serve as multifunctional spaces that support students’ learning experiences, emotional stability, and creative thinking. In particular, the 2022 revised national curriculum highlights the importance of common spaces in schools by introducing the high school credit system and emphasizing student autonomy and personalized learning. However, school space innovation projects in Korea have mainly focused on short-term environmental improvements through building renovations, and systematic research on spatial planning that reflects students’developmental characteristics and curriculum goals remains insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to propose planning directions for common spaces that support the developmental characteristics of high school students in line with the paradigm shift in education and the 2022 revised curriculum. (Method) Based on Erik Erikson’s theory of identity development and Lev Vygotsky’s theory of social interaction, the developmental characteristics of high school students were analyzed. Key characteristics of common and in-between spaces were extracted from previous studies and cross-analyzed to derive five core elements—interaction, flexibility, polycentricity, placeness, and connectivity. These elements were set as evaluation criteria and applied to four domestic and international secondary educational facilities, which were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively with expert consultation. (Results) The analysis showed that international cases integrate common spaces into the overall spatial structure of schools and operate them as complex learning-living programs, thereby realizing a balanced implementation of the five elements. In contrast, domestic cases were limited to specific spaces, showing relatively low levels of polycentricity and flexibility. Among all cases, interaction was rated the highest, indicating its critical role in fostering students’ identity exploration, social network building, and self-directed learning. (Conclusions) This study, based on Aldo van Eyck’s concept of in-between space, proposed design directions for common spaces in high schools. The analysis identified interaction as a key element in activating these spaces, suggesting that environments fostering communication and collaboration among students can promote self-directed learning and developmental growth. Furthermore, the integrated operational approaches observed in international cases present valuable insights for improving the design and management of domestic educational facilities. These findings can serve as foundational resources for advancing common spaces in secondary schools into student-centered, multifunctional environments and propose future directions for expanding such spaces into learning settings that integrate growth, relationships, and collaboration through empirical studies on spatial behavior.
