Abstract

Bloodstain pattern analysis(BPA) can be a crucial physical piece of evidence at crime scenes, playing an important role in resolving cases by analyzing the shape, size, and distribution of bloodstains resulting from the actions of the perpetrator and victim. However, since BPA relies on the experience and expertise of the analyst, there is a potential for subjective interpretation, which may affect the accuracy of crime scene reconstruction and legal judgments. In particular, BPA is a complex field that draws on contributions from various academic disciplines, making the education and on-the-job training of analysts essential. While there have been cases of misjudgments caused by BPA in foreign countries, discussions on improving the accuracy and reliability of the analysis continue. However, in South Korea, there is a lack of research on the relationship between the accuracy of bloodstain pattern analysis and the experience and expertise of the analysts. This study aims to compare and analyze the impact of the experience and expertise of bloodstain pattern analysts on the accuracy of BPA, seeking ways to improve the accuracy and reliability of the analysis. The ultimate goal is to enhance the trustworthiness of BPA as evidence in legal proceedings.
