This paper presents research on making questions and analyzing writing tests. Students' communicative competence is to be measured with balanced testing tools. However there have not been practical test tools that can evaluate the real writing competencies of the students. This has been the major obstacle to objective evaluations. This paper approaches these problems in hopes of solving them. While existing writing tests employed an indirect method of evaluation concerned with accuracy of grammar and vocabulary, these tests tools adopt a direct method of evaluation, measuring examinees' writing competences through examination of compositions written with a given subject and form. These tests tools contain questions of all levels. Texts and themes which fit to each level are selected for examinees to write various compositional forms such as a diary, a card, an e-mail, a document, a resume, or an essay. The examinees' compositions are checked in the categories of grammar, discourse, and pragmatics. The results of tests tools created through these processes were analyzed twice. Results show that these testing tools have high correlations with students' levels and the achievement tests within the Korean language institute. This affirms that the tests tools are the proper testing tools to rate the composition competences of the examinees. (Yonsei University)
