An Overview of Environmental Essays and Their Criticisms: Reviewing the Last 10 Years' Achievement of Literature and Environment

This paper presents the development of American environmental essay as a remarkable evolution of the environmental essay. Starting with the transcendentalist's view of nature, the American essay evolves, by way of the scientific research of Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson into the eco-friendly practice and writings of Gary Snyder, Wendell Berry and many others. Since Ji-ha Kim launched his creed of sangmyungsasang, the East Asian metaphysics-rooted (more often than not) view of nature and humans has been introduced and re-examined in terms of environmental perspective. Among 9 articles discussing environmental essays, which have been published in Literature and Environment for the last 10 years,just a single article is about Korean essay, and the others foreign environmental essays. And criticism on American essays dominates the foreign sector. The less publication of environmental essay partly explains less articles in the field of Korean criticism. However, the relevant Korean scholarship needs to invest its concern more actively in searching for recently-published environmental essays and analyzing them.
