Abstract

This paper explores how N. Scott Momaday's House Made of Dawn presents the relationship between cultural identity and the ceremony for healing. The fiction presents how Abel loses his cultural identity and how he recovers it. Abel tries to cure his sense of alienated being by performing the so-called initiation ceremonies. Momaday pays attention to the function of language to link Abel's recovery of cultural identity and his healing process. Abel's language begins to deteriorate when he leaves his own land. He recovers his language when he joins the ceremonial race and sings the night chant. Momaday also stresses the importance of land for Abel to heal his alienation from the land. Abel loses his cultural identity when he does not have the conviction that earth is vital. The traditional ceremonies such as singing the night chant and joining the running enable native Americans to sense their communion with the land and thereby to (re)construct their cultural identity. Momaday posits the principle of interconnectedness at the center of the subject of cultural identity and the ceremony for healing. Momaday's House Made of Dawn could be read in a context of an ecologically friendly text because the fiction pursues that principle.
