Abstract

William Faulkner’s short novel, “The Bear” is widely recognized as an ecological masterpiece written in the twentieth century. However, even though there are strong Buddhist elements in the novel, it is hard to find any research linking “The Bear” and Buddhist philosophy. Faulkner creates typical characters and these typical characters explicitly illustrate a Buddhist key philosophy, that of “Interdependent Arising”. Isaac is the character who understands the interdependence of nature and human beings well through his experiences in the woods with Sam Fathers and Old Ben, hence he rejects inheritance of land ownership. Isaac realizes that self and others are not separable because of interdependent arising and so overcomes his selfish greed and practices a life of non-greed by internalizing a merciful spirit. That is why it is natural to conclude Isaac as a living Buddha. Unlike Isaac, Boon is a typical anti-ecological character among others in the novel. His behavior and thought strongly represent greed and he never leaves that greed behind. Besides these characterizations there is another noticeable feature which is the author’s ecological language usage. His descriptions of wilderness illustrate longing and shame at the same time. All evidence suggests that it is quite appropriate to conclude this novel contains Buddhist concepts such as Interdependent arising and greed.
