Abstract
This study aims to examine Cormac McCarthy’s ecological consciousness and his vision of post-apocalyptic world. In The Road, McCarthy narrates the tragic story of a man and his son who traverse a post-apocalyptic, ashen, America. After an unknown catastrophe, they struggle against freezing temperatures and savage survivors to reach the supposedly warm seacoast of the south. As human history is inextricably entwined with an environmental history, the desolate settings of the Road reflect the depravity of humanity. However, the man continues to tell the boy that they are “carrying the fire”—that is, the concept of remaining moral in a society where morality has eroded. As they are “good guys” who are carrying the fire, the man and the boy can carry out their survival journey. After the man is dead, the boy meet another “good family.” If human civilization is to come back to the world, it will be through the endeavor of the good boy. The living environment, which is damaged irreversibly by human error and negligence, cannot be recovered perfectly as it was, however. Accordingly, McCarthy, the author of The Road, warns of the ecological destruction and its results.
