본 연구의 목표는 마가렛 앳우드의 작품, 『오릭스와 크레이크』에서 관계 자체의 중요성을 의미하는 낭만적 낙관주의 개념을 규명하여 인간-미생물의 공존관계를 생태비평적으로 고찰하는 것이다. 미생물에 대한 자연과학적 연구와 생태비평의 이론은 인간-미생물 관계의 중요성을 확실한 근거와 함께 강조한다. 본 작품은 낭만적 낙관주의가 미생물의 공포에 매몰되지 않고 양면성을 인식하여, 긍정적인 공존관계를 강화하는 데 기여할 수 있음을 제시한다. 특히 미생물에 대한 적대적 관점이 인간의 불멸추구의 욕망과 관련되고 이를 극복하기 위한 관점을 제시한다. 작품에서 제시된 낭만적 낙관주의는 현재 코로나 사태에서 미생물과의 생산적인 협력관계를 모색하는 데 기여할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to figure out the concept of “Romantic Optimism”, which emphasizes the relationship itself with unknown in Margaret Atwood’s novel, Oryx and Crake, and to explore a coexistence between human and microbes in terms of ecocritical perspective. Results from natural science studies and ecocritical theories warrant the importance of human-microbes relation. This novel points out that a hostile stand against microbes may be related with desire of immortality, and suggests that we can sustain coexistence with microbes recognizing its ambivalence. The Romantic Optimism, which is embodied in Jimmy-the Snowman in the novel, can contribute to explore productive mutualism with microbes in even recent COVID-19 situation.
