Abstract
The Island of Doctor Moreau, by H. G. Wells, the father of science fiction, is a future prophetic novel that combines his natural scientific knowledge and imagination. This study investigated the anthropocentric selfishness and arrogance in this novel, and examined the message of the novel. Doctor Moreau tried to transform animals and humanize them through animal experiments, and even to reform their minds. He saw animals in the natural state as inferior to humans and evil compared to humans, and tried to control them by ignoring the natural ecological order and creating an artificial order. His experiments had problems in that he tried to control his creations through an artificial order, to conduct animal experiments without considering the suffering of animals, and to even try to reform the minds of animals. And through the ending in which he is eventually killed by his creation due to the failure of his experiments, it makes readers to think various issues such as the order of nature, the meaning of community, humanity and morality, and animal experiments. However, Wells concludes the novel with the concept of hope rather than pessimism, implicitly conveying that we must act responsibly for the consequences of our actions.
