Abstract

Coronaphobia evokes a study of environmental humanities on pandemic literature, as well as medical researches in terms of public awareness and reaction on COVID-19. Agential realism helps that environmental humanities reconsider public awareness for contagious diseases with material relationships of human-nonhuman world. Specially, agential realist approach to pandemic literatures can challenge public myth on contagious diseases and ask new awareness on them revealing how they have affected public mentality. Of them, Philip Roth’s Nemesis demonstrates how public fear can transmit to social hatred in uncertainty and what real reaction anthropocentric interpretation on contagious diseases lead to, and emphasizes new kinds of human solidarity for the infected through 1940’s polio situation. This study figures out agential realist implications, which means to reject any kind of hatred on others and hasty social interpretations of contagious diseases and to focus on patients’ treatment, rehabilitation, and their normalization with non-anthropocene awareness on them. This implications can contribute to overcome self-destructive coronaphobia, and to reduce people’s sufferings in their real life.
