Abstract
The convergence of economic ideas has reduced the scope for cultural variations to the prosperity of nations in the global economy, and economic theories have failed to unravel the puzzle of development fully. This leads us to search for a new model and to diagnose the notion of cultural residues on development as a common denominator. While global development taps the cultural shift toward quality of life as the future engine, the broader canvas of historical accounts signifies the role of culture on social development. Faced with the pressure of sustainable development, an analytical framework can be provided here that involves critical components of cultural dimensions: power tolerance, individualism, competition, and gender orientation. The regression analysis indicates that the values of power tolerance, competition, and individualism increase subjective quality of life while masculine culture may have a disadvantage when it comes to providing life satisfaction and happiness. It offers an important insight into why some countries and groups have done better than others, not just in economic terms but also with respect to consolidation of quality of life. There is, however, no sign of contingency across countries, rather an indication of increasing divergence, not permitting one culture’s standards for the quality of life to prevail. Cultural policy objectives need to be designed in a broad and long-term perspective with the development of clear indicators for policy evaluation and community building.
