Abstract

This article explores Native American poems in terms of the commons theory. As the climate crisis has visualized its emergency, the commons theory has developed toward establishing sustainable communities, but it tends to focus on using limited resources. Recent commons theorists indicate this limit and argue that today’s commons theory has to accentuate the commoning process, the active participation in establishing commons based on the ideas of reciprocity, non-exploitation, and co-existence with respect. In this light, some Native American movements embody the theory, such as the Standing Rock Protest, and Native American poets explore this vision in their poems. During the history of being colonized, these Native Americans realized their survival depended on the other’s survival, and poets have poeticized this vision to overcome neo-liberal exploitation and suppression. This indigenous knowledge is especially required in this era, more than ever, giving us a future-oriented and sustainable perspective, resisting the current destructive system.
