Abstract

This paper reads Yun Yi-hyeong’s short story “Danny” in detail from the perspective of ecology and care. “Danny” is judged to be a text that has the motif of care at its core and leaves much open to the possibility of being read as eco-caring, especially as an ethics of the other in ecofeminism. Caring starts from women’s long experience, but it is an attempt to challenge and break away from androcentrism and anthropocentrism, and is an ethics of the other that seeks to respond to areas that have been marginalized and oppressed in modern technological society. In that respect, the care of “Danny” is in line with the care ethics of ecofeminism. The possibility of revolutionary love shown by the narrator and Danny shows that it does not occur in familiar and intimate situations, but rather can cross boundaries. From an ecological perspective, such empathy and sensitivity provide the possibility for humans to become less destructive beings or form less violent relationships. The ecological literary meaning and value of “Danny” is not small. “Danny” takes the form of a confession. the authority of objectivity is sacrificed and the subjectivity of the narrator is brought to the fore, and in this case, the authenticity of the confession becomes a more important factor than factuality. Confession of a past failure to respond appropriately to love with a machine is an act of carefully unraveling, rather than covering up, a history and situation that one did not understand. In order to understand things that are not understood and unknown, it is necessary to talk about them step by step, and if this is a kind of act of responding, his act of self-description is interpreted in the area of response. His confession of regret and self- reproach is something that can be said to be a memory and endurance that an ecologically ethical subject can do.
