Abstract

This study examines two royal investiture edicts housed in the Jangseogak Archives—The Investiture Edict of Crown Prince Successor Uiso and The Investiture Edict of Royal Consort Gyeongbin Kim—which were mounted in the form of decorative scrolls. By analyzing the structure and stylistic features of these edicts, the research aims to shed light on the symbolic and artistic dimensions of Joseon’s royal decorative scroll-mounting practices. As official documents issued by the king to confer royal titles, these edicts were produced as part of formal rites such as chaekrye or garye, and were completed in the form of gwonchukjang (scrolls). Drawing on the Uiso Seson Chaekrye Dogam Uigwe, the study reconstructs the mounting process through categories such as jikjo-hyeong (weaving style), hoejang-sik (border style), and bonggwah-sik (sealing method), while identifying the materials used. By comparing these details with surviving artifacts, the study reveals the concrete visual and material characteristics of scroll-mounted royal edicts. These documents featured richly decorated inner and outer borders (naemyeon, chamyeon) composed of various fabrics and patterns, and were accompanied by structural components such as scroll rods (hoengchukmok), jade knobs (okmagi), and fittings like yeongja and cheomja for securing and rolling the scroll. Notably, decorative motifs including dragons, phoenixes, flaming pearls (yeouiju), and cloud-treasure patterns (unbo) symbolized royal status, authority, and permanence. However, inconsistencies between recorded descriptions and actual materials highlight the need for direct examination of physical artifacts. The use of the highest-quality materials even for auxiliary elements further underscores that these edicts functioned not merely as documents, but as symbolic objects of royal authority. By comprehensively analyzing the structural and decorative aspects of investiture edicts, this study affirms the dignity and identity embedded in Joseon’s royal decorative scroll-mounting practices and contributes to a broader understanding of this unique cultural heritage.
