본 연구의 목적은 초등수학영재학생과 일반초등학생의 성격특성을 비교하고 그 결과를 바탕으로 우리나라 영재학생들의 성격특성을 이해하는데 도움이 될 수 있는 기초자료를 제공하는데 있다. 본 연구에 참여한 연구대상은 서울시 2개 교육지원청 영재교육원 소속 초등수학영재학생 92명과 서울시 K지역의 초등학교에 재학 중인 일반초등학생 96명이었으며, 연구대상학생의 성격특성 측정에는 NEO 아동성격검사를 사용하였다. 영재교육대상자 여부와 학년을 독립변인으로 하고 5요인 성격 특성을 종속변인으로 하는 다변량 분산분석(MANOVA)을 실시한 결과 신경증과 친화성 요인을 제외한 외향성, 개방성, 성실성 요인에서 초등수학영재학생이 일반초등학생보다 통계적으로 유의미하게 높은 점수를 보였다. 집단 간 유의미한 차이가 나타난 외향성, 개방성, 성실성 요인의 하위 점수에 대한 다변량 분산분석을 실시한 결과 외향성의 하위 요인 중에서는 지배성에서, 개방성의 하위요인 중에서는 창의성과 사려성에서, 그리고 성실성의 하위 요인 중에서는 유능감과 동조성에서 초등수학영재학생들이 일반초등학생에 비해 평균점수가 유의미하게 높았다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 영재학생의 성격특성이 영재학생의 선발 및 교육에 갖는 함의, 그리고 영재를 대상으로 한 성격특성연구에 관한 논의 및 제언을 제시하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to provide basic information for the better understandings of Korean gifted students' personality traits through a comparison of personality traits of mathematically gifted elementary students and their average peers. The participants of the study were 92 mathematically gifted elementary students and 96 average elementary students. NEO personality inventory for children was used for the measurement of personality traits of the participating students. After a MANOVA was performed, it was found that the two groups of the gifted and average students showed statistically significant differences in the scores of extraversion, openness to experience, and conscientiousness among the Big-five personality traits. Subsequent, additional MANOVAs were conducted on the each groups of the sub-factor scores of the above three personality traits. The results from a series of MANOVAs indicated that the scores of the two groups were statically different in the measure of dominance subfactor for extraversion; creativity and consideration sub-factors for openness to experience; competence and conformity sub-factors for conscientiousness. Based upon the major findings of the study, the implications were provided, especially for the identification of and the educational programs for the gifted students, and some suggestions were made for future studies regarding the personality traits of the gifted and average students.
