동서양의 창의성차이 고찰 : 창의적 문화와 환경, 성격, 사고, 산물을 중심으로

서양의 문화는 개인주의, 자유주의 문화라 할 수 있는 반면, 동양의 문화는 집단주의, 유교주의 문화라 할 수 있다. 많은 선행 연구들은 개인주의, 자유주의 문화인 서양 문화가 동양 문화보다 창의적인 환경과 창의적인 성격 형성에 유리하다고 한다. 그러나 창의적 사고력과 창의적 업적에서 서양인이 동양인보다 우수하다는 일관성 있는 증거는 없다. 창의적 환경과 창의적 성격 형성에서 서양인보다 불리한 입장에 있는 동양인이 창의적 사고력과 업적에서 상대적으로 열등하다고 말할 수 없는 이유는 동서양의 창의성이 어떤 부분에서 다르기 때문이라 생각한다. 즉, 동양인의 창의성은 수정과 적응이라면 서양인의 창의성은 독창성과 개성이 주된 본질을 이룬다고 할 수 있다. 만약 이렇다면 동양인의 창의성을 발현하는데 필요한 환경과 성격은 지금까지 연구되어온 창의적 환경 및 성격 특성과 다를 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 시각에서 그동안 국내 연구가 거의 전무한 상태에 있었던 동서양의 문화 간 차이를 고려한 창의성 연구가 필요함을 제안하였고, 동양의 창의성 모델 더 세부적으로 한국인의 창의성 모델에 대한 연구가 필요함을 제안하였다.
Abstract
Asian societies have confucian/collectivistic cultures while western societies have liberal/individualistic cultures. According to early studies, liberal/individualistic cultures in the West have more advantages to shape creative environment and creative personality than Asian cultures. However there is not yet the convincing evidence demonstrating Westerners are superior to Asians in creative thinking ability. Rather it seems that the creativity of Asian people is different from that of westerners. We think that the creativity of Asian is the creativity of modification and adaptation while that of Westerner is the creativity of originality and individuality. If this hypothesis is right, the contents of environment and personality inducive to develope creativity might be different between Asian and Western societies. This study suggests that it is necessary to deepen our understanding about cultural differences of creativity and also develope oriental and/or Korean model of creativity.
