Abstract
The Change of Han Seungwon’s novels from 1970s to early 1980s, is the process that the alienated women who had kept silent, get a new language. In his novels of 1970s, single mothers and madwomen, even though they are the victims of male violence during the colonial period and Korean War, are persecuted by the community. They don’t have any chance to protest against the assailants or to defend themselves. The allowed way to them is only to compromise with the unfair situation or just live isolated in the beach. Especially the case of single mother raising sons and grandsons, Han Seungwon’s novels signify their internal feeling state as ‘Han’(恨). Han means the traditional Korean emotion mixed with grudge, sorrow and resignation. Unlike single mothers who are not hostile to a patriarchal system, madwomen who live isolated in the beach are described as inexplicable and stronglysexed women. That is to say, madwomen who live isolated in the beach, represent the female monsters created in men’s guilty conscience and fright. On the other side, there are also heroes or male narrators who weave their war experiences into stories through a comprehensible and elucidatory language. This kind of gender gap is removed in the sequence novel Daughter of Fire. The male character of this sequence novel, who are dismissed from a newspaper, is suffering from psychic disease. By conceding his shamanistic gift and identifying with his shaman mother, the male intellectual ‘I’ become a shaman and get a shamanistic language. By this process, his Oedipus complex is overcome and he accepts the eroticism of his mother.
