Abstract

We designed this study for verifying the effect of emotional appeals as a consumer-friendly risk communication strategy on food risk. We selected two risk cases, Genetically Modified Organism(GMO) and Benzopyrene, that consumer shows overreact and underreact response rather than experts assessment. We gathered data from 560 college students in their 20s, and assigned them to emotional and rational appeal group. We compared their risk perception, attitude, and behavior intend before and after the exposure of test scenario. The result shows emotional appeal changes consumer's response more positive way on both GMO and Benzopyrene cases. Based on the result, we suggest that governments need to apply the emotional appeal as a consumer-friendly risk communication strategy more actively.
