다문화그림책을 활용한 이야기나누기 활동에서 유아의 다문화 감수성 변화에 관한 실행연구

본 연구는 다문화그림책을 활용한 이야기나누기 활동이 유아의 다문화감수성에 미치는 영향을 알아보는데 목적을 두고 만 4세 유아 7명을 대상으로 실행연구를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 다문화그림책은 유아들에게 나와 다른 사람을 공감하고 이해할 수 있는 좋은 매체였다. 유아들은 다문화그림책을 읽음으로 인해 기존에 다른 문화에 가졌던 편견이 자연스럽게 감소되었다. 둘째, 유아들은 이야기나누기 활동초기에는 문화를 보는 관점이 자문화 중심적이었으며, 타문화에 대한 문화적인 차이는 인식할 수 있지만 타문화에 대해 방어 전략을 사용하였다. 셋째, 유아들은 이야기나누기 활동이 진행됨에 따라 타문화도 자신의 문화와 같은 맥락의 문화이고 자문화 역시 여러 문화들 중에 하나라는 것을 인정하는 수용의 단계에 이르렀으며, 이 후 감정이입을 통해 타문화를 이해하고 타문화의 입장에서 사건을 바라보는 적응의 단계도 보였다. 유아들은 이야기나누기활동이 끝날 무렵에는 자신을 포함한 타인도 세계 안에 속한 ‘나’이자 ‘우리’라는 것을 이해하는 것으로 통합의 단계까지 도달함을 보여주었다. 이상과 같이 다문화 그림책을 활용한 이야기나누기 활동은 유아의 다문화감수성을 변화시키는데 효과적이었고, 이는 Bennett와 Bennett(2004)가 제시한 발달단계에 따라 발달함을 시사한다.
Abstract
Using the action research method, this research explores changes in children’s multicultural sensitivity through story sharing activities. After reading multicultural picture books and implementing story sharing activities with seven four-year-old children, we found the following. First, multicultural picture books helped the children understand and accept others who were different from them. The children showed a decrease in prejudice toward other cultures after reading the multicultural picture books. Second, in the early stage of book reading and sharing, the children showed ethnocentric cultural attitude, being able to identify the difference between their own culture and others' with defensive mechanism against differences. Third, as the activities progressed, the children came to understand other cultures as a culture like their own, and reached to the stage of accepting differences. They also showed the stage of adaptation to difference, understanding other cultures and seeing events from perspectives of different cultures. Toward the end of story reading and sharing activities, the children showed the integration of difference, being able to incorporate themselves and others together into a world of coexistence. Therefore, the multicultural story reading and sharing activities contributed to the development of children's multicultural sensitivity according to the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity developed by Bennett and Bennett (2004).
