Abstract
Some consumers purchase refill products for environmental protection, while others purchase them because they expect refills to be cheaper than the original products. This research explores the price aspects of the refill products, focusing on consumer expectations and market practices. Study 1 conducted an online survey of 981 consumers to understand their fairness perceptions about pricing of refill products below, above, or equal to the original product. Of the 15 pricing practices examined, the unit prices of refill products to be more expensive than those of the original products (i.e., refill surcharge) was judged as the second most unfair pricing practice. Moreover, the practice that the same unit price for original and refill products was also perceived as very unfair pricing. Study 2 and Study 3 investigated incidences of refill surcharges and factors that are related to them. Specifically, Study 2 analyzed selling prices of four large retail stores obtained by a price information service company. Study 3 analyzed selling prices of three department stores, four large retail stores, and three supermarkets that were collected for this research. Refill surcharges were found in 12.6% of all cases in Study 2 and 26.1% of all cases in Study 3. Refill surcharges occurred more frequently when the original product’s volume was larger than that of the refill product and when it was more difficult to compare volumes of two products.
