Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate features of young children’s metacognitive behaviors depending on their age during free playtime in a preschool. Study participants were 38 three-to-five-year-olds who attended a private kindergarten in Seoul. Data were collected by videotaping and observing their play; children’s speech and behaviors were coded based on the Cambridgeshire Independent Learning (C.Ind.Le) Coding Scheme and the frequencies, duration, ratios of the coded sub-dimensions (e.g. monitoring, executive control) were calculated using INTERACT8. The results are as follows. As for the aspects of metacognitive behaviors by age, three-year olds displayed metacognitive behaviors for approximately 75% of the playtime; monitoring was most commonly observed, and executive control was observed for the longest duration. Four-year olds displayed metacognitive behaviors for approximately 66% of the playtime; executive control was observed most commonly and for the longest duration. Five-year olds displayed metacognitive behaviors for approximately 78% of playtime; monitoring was observed most commonly and for the longest duration. The study findings suggest that future research should pay more attention to metacognitive elements embedded in three-year-olds’ constructive play and various meanings of children’s play behaviors should be examined more deeply across diverse types of play to shed light on young children’s competencies.
