Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop the contents of competencies necessary for early childhood teachers to effectively support young children's play. For this purpose, relevant literature was analyzed and telephone interviews were conducted about the competencies necessary to support play with 20 teachers in kindergartens or daycare centers. Based on the literature analysis and phone interview, the preliminary contents of early childhood teachers’ competencies in supporting play was created. The preliminary contents of early childhood teachers’ competencies in supporting play consisted of a total of 30 competencies in 4 categories: (1) understanding of play (6 items), (2) observation of play (4 items), (3) management of play (10 items), and (4) response of play and communication (10 items). In order to verify the validity of the preliminary contents of early childhood teachers’ competencies in supporting play, a questionnaire was distributed and completed by 262 kindergarten or daycare teachers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong provinces, and factor analysis was conducted. As a result of factor analysis, four factors were found, which was same to the preliminary contents. However, in factor analysis, the ‘analysis of play’, which had been originally in a different category, moved to the ‘observation of play category’, so the title of the category was modified to ‘observation and analysis of play.’ The final contents of early childhood teachers’ competencies in supporting play consisted of a total of 30 competencies in 4 categories: (1) understanding of play (6 items), (2) observation and analysis of play (11 items), (3) management of play (7 items), and (4) response of play and communication (6 items). In order for early childhood teachers to have competencies developed in this study, it is necessary to provide systematic education about young children’s play to preservice teachers, and support in-service teachers to enhance their competencies.
