Abstract
This study empirically investigates economic and social factors that affect suicide rates using two-panel models - AR(1) fixed effects and difference GMM models - that reflect the characteristics of the panel data from 16 regions in Korea from 2000 to 2022. Most explanatory variables had the same signs and were statistically significant, regardless of panel models or gender classification. As economic factors, the per capita income level showed a positive (+) sign with suicide rates, but the income growth rate showed a negative (-) sign. The suicide rate was high in the regions with a higher proportion of low-income groups and a lower degree of financial independence. The unemployment rates exhibited a positive sign when estimating using the GMM model. As social factors, suicide rates were also found to be low in the regions with high female economic participation rates and high in the regions with high divorce and birth rates. It is noticeable that the aging rate over 65 years old or the proportion of young people in their teens and twenties had positive signs on the female suicide rates, but had insignificant effects on the male suicide rates. The urbanization rate had a negative sign when estimating using the AR(1) fixed effect model. These results may draw important implications for establishing suicide prevention policies in Korea, where the economic downturn continues in a low birth rate-aging society.
