Abstract

This paper investigates analytically and empirically the socioeconomic determinants of regional suicide rates in Korea. Analytical insights suggest how individuals having different income levels and different ages commit suicide when the expected value of the utility of the rest of his or her life falls below a certain critical threshold. A panel data set for 15 Korean regions for the period 1990-2004 was assembled to test the analytical investigations. Contrary to prior expectations, fixed effects evidence shows that the implied effect of unemployment on male and female suicide rates is negative. It turns out that the increase in elderly population and urbanization are significantly associated with higher suicide rates. Meanwhile, the estimate of the effect of per capita regional GDP on men's suicide rates is negative and statistically significant, while that of divorce rates on men's suicide rates is significantly positive. However, no statistically significant impact of female labor participation rates and fertility rates is found on suicide rates. Hence, the national suicide prevention strategy should be population-based focusing on the elderly population, low-income households, and urban groups. Also, for the prevention of suicide, we need to endeavor to reduce divorce rates by promoting family ties and social integration.
