Abstract

This study aimed to analyze temporary psychological and emotional factors on saving intentions changes. The two framing scenarios(positive saving and negative spending one) and three financial stress levels such as eustress, distress, and no stress were adopted as the temporary psychological and emotional factors for saving intentions. Saving intentions were measured by saving and spending ratio using bi-polar scales with showing different amount of money: the actual incentive, the hypothetical hundred thousand, and 5 hundred thousand won. This is because people would like to bias their saving intention based on the amount of money. Data were collected through an online-survey method with considering at least 30 respondents in each experimental group. Respondents were restricted as an university student in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Gyeongsangbuk-do. Then, total 205 respondents(1st 56 and 2nd 149 ones) were collected. The results indicated that the saving intentions before and after treatment would increase or decrease due to the amount of money even same treatment conditions. Also, the saving intentions more likely to increase when showing relatively huge amount of hypothetical money. Second, after comparing the saving intention changes depending on the framing effect and financial stress, framing influenced the saving intention changes significantly when 5 hundred thousand won. However, no significant difference of the saving intention changes because of financial stress groups, Third, after comparing the saving intentions before and after financial stress treatment with considering the no stress group as a control, the saving intentions under distress would decrease similar to ones under no stress when showing relatively small amount of money. Otherwise, the saving intentions under eustress would increase similar to ones under no stress when showing relatively huge amount of hypothetical money. Finally, the combined effect of both the framing effect and financial stress was not observed. Conclusively, saving intentions would change due to the framing effect, financial stress, and amount of money. Also, the framing effect and financial stress affect the saving intentions independently. Therefore, policy makers would be able to induce preferable financial behaviors such as spending and saving through the framing effect and financial stress.
