Abstract
This study analyzes Correct Teaching of Great Learning (大學直指) by Seo Myeong-eung (徐命膺, 1716–1787) and examines his interpretive framework within the Neo-Confucian tradition, focusing on the concepts of cultivating the family (齊家), governing the state (治國), and bringing peace to all under heaven (平天下) in The Great Learning (大學). Seo Myeong-eung declared The Great Learning to be a “book of the mind’s law” (心法之書). He interpreted the notion of renewing the people (新民) not as a program of reform imposed from above but as the reciprocal activation of already-renewed minds, where each individual becomes responsible for illuminating their own moral virtue (明德). He understood family, state, and all under heaven not as administrative domains but as relational extensions of ethical responsibility. He argued that these are not externalized duties but differentiated expressions of the same inner structure of moral cultivation. He compared the first nine chapters of The Great Learning to the process of weaving, where mind (心) and intention (意) serve as warp (經), and benevolence (仁), yielding (讓), opportunity (機), and forgiveness (恕) form the weft (緯), illustrating the interwoven articulation of moral principles. In the tenth chapter, governing and peace are not seen as expanding outward but as being rearticulated across relational contexts. He also contextualized The Great Learning within the intellectual tradition extending from the Book of Documents (Shujing, 「堯典」) to Mencius (Mengzi). In conclusion, Seo Myeong-eung’s Correct Teaching of Great Learning does not simply reinterpret the classic—it reconfigures its structure through the lens of mind’s law, showing how Neo-Confucian orthodoxy could be sustained and renewed amid late Joseon’s shifting intellectual climate. By attending to the internal grammar of ethical cultivation, his work affirms the enduring relevance of Confucian discourse in rethinking moral order.
