민주정치는 시민의 참여를 바탕으로 성립된다. 더 많은 사회구성원들이 더 현명한 선택을 할 수 있도록 돕는 선거교육은 민주시민교육에서 핵심적 영역이라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 미국의 대통령선거 시기에 학교 현장에서 적용된 다양한 선거교육의 사례를 검토하고 우리나라 선거교육에 주는 시사점을 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 미국에서는 학생들을 통해 부모들의 선거참여를 높이고, 선거와 정치제도에 대한 지식을 높이며, 토론을 통해 선거 관련 쟁점에 대해 심화된 이해를갖도록 하는 다양한 프로그램들이 시도되었다. 특히 최근에는 학생들의 흥미를 높이고 접근성을 향상시키기 위해 인터넷과 모바일 플랫폼을 활용한 선거교육들이 늘어나고 있다. 우리나라에서도 교실을 중심으로 한 선거교육을 체계화하는 한편 온라인 공간을 활용한 선거교육의 방법들이 적극적으로 모색될 필요가 있다.
Abstract
Democracy stands on the base of participation of citizen. Election education which help citizen to participate more and to make better decision is an essential part of citizenship education. On this study, various election education programs which were implemented in presidential election campaign period in America will be analysed to find a implication to Korean election education. In America, various election education programs which raise parents turn out with student, raise knowledge about election and political system, improve understanding about electoral issues by interactive discussion were implemented. Recently, election educations using internet and mobile platform increased to improve accessibility and interest of student. In Korea, election education in classroom should be more systemized and online method should be tried more aggresively.
