Abstract
Empathy as an essential element in family therapy makes therapeutic relationship and decides the quality of therapy. Empathy is accomplished when counselors express the empathy and clients receive it. So family therapist should understand and have skills on verbal expressions to conduct empathic reaction. In this article, to study the family therapists' verbal expressions for empathic reaction, the literature on counseling and linguistics was reviewed. As empathy guarantees and supports opportunities of client's speaking, the role of counselor as auditor is important. So I compared auditor reaction with back-channel expression, and categorized back-channel types into 'simple reaction', 'emotion expression', 'confirmation', 'induction', and 'completion.' And I analyzed 8 family therapy cases with dialogue analysis. The results are as follows: Family therapist didn't use back-channel frequently. But it was found that back-channel made clients participate in counseling process and influenced the next process. It was suggested that back-channel types should be selected according to the type of empathic reaction, client's character, counseling situation, and dialogue context. As back-channel is a useful verbal expression to express empathy, family therapists need to be trained for it's use.
