Abstract
This study is reviewing the theoretical concept of the de-familialization of welfare states and comparing the level of de-familialization among the 22welfare states empirically. I reviewed the concept of de-familialization Esping-Andersen(1999) and Lister(1994) used in their studies theoretically and newly and comprehensively defined as 'the welfare states' institutional system helping individuals to uphold a socially acceptable standard of living independently of family relationships and to unburden thehousehold'. Newly defined 'de-familialization' consists of financial support to families, work and family reconciliation support, and security of individual benefit right. And 'financial support to families' is made up of cash benefit and tax benefit, 'work and family reconciliation support' is composed of maternity leave, paternity leave, parental leave and child care facilities (by age), and 'security of individual benefit right' is made up of individual pension right. In empirical analysis, the levels of de-familialization were compared among 22 OECD countries. Sweden shows the highest level of de-familialization(4.47) and Korea the lowest(0.95). This study contributed to the concrete conceptualiztion and indexing of de-familialization of welfare states and showed the levels of de-familialization empirically.
