미국 한인이민자 초기 이민 적응과정 연구-LA 한인타운 지역민을 중심으로-

본 연구는 미국 한인이민자를 대상으로 그들의 이민 초기 적응과정과 경험을 고찰하고자 시도되었다. 연구 참여자는 한국에서 태어났고, 가족이민을 선택한 가구의 일원으로서, 이민 기간 10년 이하의 캘리포니아 거주자로 연구에 동의한 13명이었다. 자료수집은 참여자당 2회의 심층면접을 통해 이루어졌고 자료분석은 질적연구의 한 방법인 Strauss와 Corbin의 근거이론 접근법을 사용하였다. 본 연구의 결과 개방코딩과정을 통해 110개의 개념과 35개의 하위범주, 12개의 범주가 도출되었다. 축코딩 결과 한인 이민자들은‘두려움’이라는 중심현상을 겪으며, 핵심범주인‘미국에서 성공하기’를 중심으로,‘자기적응 시도’와‘적극적 활동 추구’전략을 통해 ‘성취’,‘갈등’,‘좌절’이라는 결과에 도달하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 선택코딩 결과, 초기 이민 적응과정은‘미래지향형’,‘현실적응형’,‘갈등형’,‘자포자기형’의 4가지 유형으로 확인되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 한인 이민자들의 초기 이민과정의 유형화를 통해 이론적 기반을 마련했다는 점에서 학문적 함의가 있으며, 이민 적응을 위한 지표 및 지원정책의 기초자료를 제공한다는 점에서 정책적 함의를 지닌다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to discover early adaptation process related to Korean Immigrants in US. 13 participants who have lived in California were recruited by theoretical sampling. The data were collected through in depth interview. Collected data were analyzed through grounded theory approach of Strauss and Corbin(1998). The result of this study was that 110 concepts, 35 sud-categories and 12 categories were showed by open coding process. As a result of axial coding, Korean Immigrants have undergone the central phenomenon like 'fear' and 'succeed in US' was emerged as a core category. Also, as a result of selective coding, four kinds of types were emerged about early adaptation of Korean immigrants which are 'future-oriented', 'reality-oriented', 'conflict', 'despair'. In conclusion, This study has academic achievements since it establishes a theoretical foundation through classifying early adaptation process of Korean Immigrants as well as it can provide basic information to develop support program.
