Abstract
The purpose of this study is to make a contribution to the development of a new theory on self-adaptation processes and patterns of the interracially married female immigrants. For the research, this study primarily chooses and applies the methodology of Grounded Theory proposed by Strauss and Corbin(1988). Participants of this study were consist of ten members: eight female immigrants, one male spouse(husband) and one mother-in-law. Data were collected through in-depth interview and observation and variable documents from March 2006 to October 2006. The major findings of this study are as follows. In the process of open coding, a total of 123 concepts, 31 subcategories, and 13 categories were produced. Based on the theoretical paradigm of the grounded theory, the analysis results of the categories is as follows. The core phenomena observed in the self-adaptaion process of the female immigrants married interracilly in Korea are 'conflict', 'confusion', and 'isolation'. The causal condition is 'vague intermarriage'. As for the contextual conditions are 'preliminary information', 'initial experience'. The intervening conditions are 'cultural identity', 'support system'. And the action/interaction strategies are 'strive to lead their lives', 'reduce the cultural gaps'. The consequences were 'familial identity', 'sense of achievement', 'future prospect of their lives'. The processes of experience are 'confusion and conflict', 'look around and try', 'finding one's own position harmoniously', 'putting down roots as a member of community'. The core category in the self-adaption process of the female immigrants married interracially in Korea is set to be 'Finding self and taking root even in the phases of confusion'. The adaptation patterns of those females are analyzed into three different kinds: 'stable root-taking', 'trying with a hope up', and 'being shaken by doubt'.
